The Big Bad Wolf is running a successful scam on Little Red's Grandma until Little Red catches him in the act.

In this free short story Big Bad Wolf is running a successful scam on Little Red's Grandma until Little Red catches him in the act.

If you like this sample story, look for The Newfangled Fairy Tales series.  Each fairy tale in the series puts a delightful new spin on classic stories and themes. King Midas is a workaholic banker who would rather play with his money than attend his son's Little League baseball games. The Three Bears invade Goldy's house because their forest home is being stripped to build a super highway. A Prince refuses to marry any of the grumpy princesses who lost sleep because there were peas under their mattresses. A clever princess pays a dragon to lose a fight so she can marry the man she loves. The twenty short stories in this series are lots of fun.

"Here is a new generation of fairy tales to make children laugh, not hide under the covers."
--Stephen Mooser, author of Young Marion's Adventures in Sherwood Forrest  A Girl's to the Rescue Novel

Description: Hilarious twist on a old tale. The Big Bad Wolf has conned his way into a food stealing scheme. In this tale Red doesn't need a huntsmen to save her, only her phone and a quick call to the authorities. Worry not, no grandmas are eaten.

In Short: This book is a quick fun read that I think children will really enjoy reading. It also makes a good bedtime story for younger kids. At only 20 pages it a very fast read and a good length to entertain. For anyone of any age who likes fairy tales and a good short story this is a great book to pick up, for free!

Pros: This book is very fun and enjoyable to read. I laughed out loud when reading the note Grandma left for Red. I think both parents and children will enjoy reading this book together. I loved all the characters, the heroes and the villains alike. I actually grew quite attached to the wolves and was a little disappointed that their elaborate scam wasn't paying off in the end! This book even though it is so short it manages some great morals for children. It teaches that crime doesn't pay, don't talk to strangers, don't steal and don't scam people!

Cons: I have no issues with this book.

Parent's Guide: This book contains no horror, no eating of old ladies and no violence. Safe for all ages.

Free Story "Little Bad Wolf and Red Riding Hood" from Newfangled Fairy Tales edition by Timothy Tocher Bruce Lansky Children eBooks Reviews

Enjoyed reading this for my 10 year old. It has a refreshing new twist on an old classic. I liked the change from a scary story where people get eaten to a more age appropriate theme. The lessons of doing good for others, extending mercy, enforcing practical punishment for wrong doing, and obeying your parents are all included. All of which are certainly great lessons for children and adults alike! The author also uses a bit of (sometimes corny) humor throughout to keep the story light-hearted and interesting.

I would recommend this book to be read to children of all ages, and read by children at a normal reading level from 7-12 years old.
Having grandkids at different reading comprehension levels, I am always on the lookout for new books that will hopefully entertain them all and absolutely love the fairy tales that are written from a new perspective. When the opportunity to receive this book for free in exchange for my honest review arose, I jumped at it. My oldest grandson (10 years old) and I read this and it seemed a bit drawn out to keep his interest, although he did seem to enjoy it for the most part. The story follows closely with the original plot, but takes a bit of a twist when the father decides to help himself to items that are clearly not meant for him. The story skirts the issue of morals and family responsibility initially with the father abandoning his family and doesn't bother to set their minds at ease by letting them know where he is and that he is safe. There is also the issue of taking from those less fortunate for his own personal gain, but in the end he is confronted by his "crime" and must make things right, which is always a good lesson for the kids to learn. I have my doubts whether this story would hold the attention of a younge child or of a child closer to the upper end of the target audience but that really just depends on the individual child in my opinion. I think it would have been a bit more entertaining if illustrations had been included as well, as most kids love to have the visual as well to help their imagination process the story.
The story is amazing. I agree with the author that many children’s stories send very odd and often times not very great messages children. I really enjoyed this creative spin on Little Red Riding Hood. I found it very amusing and found myself laughing out loud at some of the dialogue. This is definitely something I’ll be reading to my children more than once, and I will also be looking for the author’s other works that follow a similar premise of taking a more “realistic” stance on some of the traditional fairy tales and fables. The author definitely has a creative mind and a lot of talent, as well as a passion for creating interesting and humorous stories for children.

This is certainly a different twist to the traditional tried and true children's fairy tales that our generation grew up with. The story line is quite similar to the original version, but very decided more modern, which I'm sure the young readers or listeners can appreciate.

I have to admit though the jury is still out on this as a true children's story. There are parts of it that I'm struggling to wrap my mind around whether I truly think is appropriate for young readers. Parts like where the young L.B. admits he is not going to follow his mother's direction to stay away from the road, this sounds more like encouraging young ears and minds to disobey their parents. I do believe this is made up for in the end when he and his Father are nabbed by the police and Red. A minor concern in my mind at this point.

The story was well written, from a graphical sense, meaning one can draw the vivid imagery in one's mind from how the author describes each scene. Definitely a modernized twist to an age-old fairy tale.

My concern above is the reason for the 4 stars instead of 5. I tend to feel overly protective of our young ones and just want to make sure that the choices they have to read during those impressionable years are good wholesome choices that will help them to grow into responsible young teens and eventually adults.
